What is a GEO strategy and how does it work?
A GEO strategy means designing content that a generative system can understand, select and use as a source. It works by starting from real user questions and turning them into very clear, complete and verifiable answers.
You need precise headings, clear definitions, reliable data, concrete examples and a structure that is easy to read even for an AI model. It is also important to strengthen brand authority with consistent content and recognizable sources. In practice, a GEO strategy does not only chase direct traffic, but visibility inside AI answers.

The steps of a GEO strategy
A GEO strategy starts with research: which questions people ask AI engines in your market, and which sources are cited in the answers today. From there comes the content map to create or rewrite, prioritized by demand volume and distance from competitors.
Then come production (direct answers, data, examples, extractable structure), brand authority building (consistency, sources, external mentions) and periodic citation monitoring. It is a repeating cycle: AI answers change, and the strategy adapts.
The most common GEO mistakes
The three most frequent: generic content that answers everything and nothing (AI prefers direct, specific answers); lack of data and sources (without numbers, definitions and citable references, a text is hard to extract); confusing structure, with key content buried in long paragraphs instead of being made visible by headings and summaries.
A methodological mistake apart: treating GEO as a one-off technical intervention instead of a continuous editorial process. Citations are built with consistency, not with one optimized page.
How to measure GEO results
GEO measurement has two levels. The first is qualitative: periodically checking, on a set of questions representative of your market, whether and how the brand is cited in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, benchmarked against competitors.
The second is quantitative: traffic from generative engines, mentions and citations, conversions from visitors coming from those sources. The data should be read as a time series: what matters is the trend, not the single measurement.
